Rio Abajo State Forest

Rio Abajo State Forest is located roughly in the north central region of Puerto Rico directly south of the city of Arecibo. It provides great camping areas in the rich forests of Puerto Rico. You will need a permit from the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources to camp overnight and there is a small fee for the permit. This state forest also offers great mountains to hike, caves to explore, and diverse birdwatching (including the Puerto Rican Parrot). Forest guides are available for hire in the area and are a great option if you want to explore the caves and the rivers that flow through some of them.

Rio Abajo State Forest is open daily and entrance to the forest is free of charge. There is also both a visitor center and and picnic area.

Rio Abajo State Forest is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 9am to 5pm, but it is closed on Mondays. For Rio Abajo State Forest information or obtaining a camping permit, call 787-880-6557.
